Subdural haematoma after the treatment of chronic hydrocephalus by ventriculocaval shunts.

چکیده

An extradural or subdural haematoma may occur after lumbar air-encephalography or ventriculography (Khalifeh, van Allen, and Sahs, 1964; Calkins, van Allen, and Sahs, 1967), after ventricular drainage (Haft, Liss, and Mount, 1960), and after administration of intravenous urea (Marshall and Hinman, 1962). The development of a subdural haematoma after the insertion of a ventriculocaval shunt for the relief of hydrocephalus has been reported only occasionally. Foltz and Shurtleff (1963) mention one case and Horwitz and Rizzoli (1967) mention another. Forrest and Cooper (1968) describe briefly two cases of massive subdural haematoma which occurred after shunting in patients with large rigid skulls and thin cerebral cortex. Becker and Nulsen (1968) mention that seven subdural haematomas occurred in their series of 140 patients treated by shunts. However, most of these occurred in infants and none of the cases are described in any detail. The factor common to these procedures appears to be the sudden reduction of intracranial pressure which results in bleeding into the subdural space, though trauma, which can be minor, may be responsible in some instances.

Chronic Subdural Hematoma after Lumboperitoneal Shunt Replacement: A Case Report From Iran

Background and Importance: Lumboperitoneal shunts are commonly used to treat several conditions, but their use can result in significant complications. We discuss a complication of these shunts that has not been reported in the literature to date. Case Presentation: An obese, 41-year-old woman admitted to Rasool Akram Hospital complaining of a severe headache and blurred vision. The ...

External hydrocephalus and subdural bleeding in infancy associated with transplacental anti-Ro antibodies.

BACKGROUND The isolated finding of an unexplained chronic subdural haematoma in an infant may suggest non-accidental head injury (NAHI). The authors report a previously undescribed cause of multifocal chronic subdural haematoma in infancy which could result in a misdiagnosis of previous NAHI. METHODS Two infants, aged 3 and 4 months of age, presented with progressively increasing head circumf...

Use of programmable versus nonprogrammable shunts in the management of normal pressure hydrocephalus

Ventriculoperitoneal shunt systems that are used in the treatment of normal pressure hydrocephalus are often associated with drainage problems. Adjustable shunt systems can prevent or treat these problems, but they may be expensive. The aim of our study is to compare the complications and total cost of several shunt systems.Patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus who underwent ventriculoper...

Subdural haematoma and the malfunctioning shunt.

Of 30 consecutive children with hydrocephalus treated by shunt implant, six developed subdural haematoma. Four of them presented with a malfunctioning shunt, and the diagnoses in all six cases were made by CT scan.

Prospective analysis of bedside percutaneous subdural tapping for the treatment of chronic subdural haematoma in adults.

OBJECTIVES Although there is general agreement that surgery is the best treatment for chronic subdural haematoma (CSDH), the extent of the surgical intervention is not well defined. METHODS The less invasive surgical technique of bedside percutaneous subdural tapping and spontaneous haematoma efflux after twist drill craniostomy under local anaesthesia was prospectively analysed in 118 adult ...
